Delta: I’ve no power to fix date for LG poll – Uduaghan
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, has said that he has no power to fix a date for the local government elections, an issue which has raised anxiety particularly among political parties in the state.
Uduaghan explained at an interactive session with reporters in Warri, that it was only Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, that could fix the date and conduct the elections.
The councils are being administered by caretaker committees since the tenure of elected chairmen and officials expired early this year.
Uduaghan said: “The date does not depend on me. DSIEC is conducting the election, I am an interested party in the election. I am a voter, so I am not the one to fix the date for the elections.”
He noted that following the numerous complaints he received, a Bill was sent to the Delta State House of Assembly, which is currently on recess, to ensure equal representation from the three senatorial districts.
The governor said if the lawmakers approve the listing, the Commission members would meet to decide how the election would hold and the date for the election.
